A Boy Named Gavin

The story of Gavin Grimm is a powerful story of struggle that no teenager should have to go through. I got to art direct and animate on this project with the always talented Dave Ellington and Joseph Le. Led by even more talent of Elyse Kelly, and Dan Fipphen , this piece helped bring Gavin’s story to life.

A collection of early concept sketches. We were exploring a style that was minimal, yet felt organic.

Concept sketches of monster characters

The recordings of the adults, and the teachers in Gavin’s life that turn on him felt so full of darkness and hatred. The earlier concepts of designing these characters pushed it to what I felt like I was listening to, monsters. Maybe on the outside they seemed normal and friendly, but on the inside was a creature filled with hate.

Early thumbnail sketches of the adults.

The concepts ended up being more simplified and we used negative space and erratic energy to represent their characters.

Early concept sketches.
